To prove funds at European immigration, it is not enough to just show a card or say you have a balance on your app. Generally, a solid set of proof gathers a **recent bank statement in your name, proof of your card's limit or balance, a small amount of cash, accommodation reservations, and a return or onward ticket**. Keep the files available offline and bring a printed copy of the main documents. Always check the format accepted in the country of entry: Spain, for example, does not accept a bank letter or an internet-generated statement as proof.

This does not mean everyone will be asked for them. It just means you will be prepared if the border agent asks for proof of your travel conditions. There is also no single amount for "Europe": each country defines its own benchmarks, which can change depending on the duration, accommodation, and purpose of the visit.

For Brazilians traveling as tourists in the Schengen Area, the visa exemption for short stays does not eliminate the entry conditions. And no single statement, card, or reservation guarantees admission on its own. The decision belongs to the border authority and considers whether the complete story of the trip makes sense.

## What immigration really evaluates

The [Schengen Borders Code](https://eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/EN/TXT/?uri=CELEX%3A02016R0399-20251012) allows the authority to verify if the visitor has sufficient resources to:

- stay at the destination for the declared period;
- pay for travel expenses;
- return to their country of origin or legally proceed to another destination.

The analysis considers the duration, the purpose of the trip, and the average cost of the visited country. The [official European Union portal](https://europa.eu/youreurope/citizens/travel/entry-exit/non-eu-nationals/index_en.htm) also lists accommodation, an invitation, and a return ticket among the documents that may be requested.

In practice, the financial proofs need to match the rest of the trip. A 20-day stay with reservations for only three nights, no clear itinerary, and a balance for two days raises more doubts than a one-week trip with a hotel, a return ticket, and compatible resources.

## Which documents prove funds at European immigration?

You do not need to rely on a single format. Put together a concise folder with easy-to-understand documents.

### 1. Bank statement or international account statement

Prefer a **recent PDF issued by the institution**, containing:

- your full name;
- date of issue or statement period;
- available balance;
- currency of the balance;
- identification of the institution.

A screenshot can help as a supplement, but it is weaker: it might not show ownership, date, or the origin of the document. The app can also fail right in the immigration line. Save the PDF on your phone, in your email, and, if possible, bring a printed copy. There are national exceptions: the [Spanish regulation](https://www.boe.es/buscar/act.php?id=BOE-A-2007-9608) does not accept bank letters or internet bank statements. To enter through Spain, bring a card accompanied by a statement in the accepted format, an updated bankbook, cash, a certified check, or traveler's checks.

If the statement is only in Portuguese, check if the consulate or the destination authority requires a translation for your case. In Portugal, the language naturally doesn't create this barrier, but for a tourist visit without a visa, there is no single translation rule valid for all countries.

### 2. Card accompanied by proof of balance or limit

The Schengen regulation admits cards as part of the evaluation, but **the physical card alone does not show how much you can spend**. Bring along a recent statement in the format accepted by the country, identifying the cardholder and showing:

- available balance, in the case of a card linked to an account;
- total limit and available limit, in the case of credit;
- the last digits of the card, when the document provides this information.

Ideally, the card should be in your name. If the funds belong to someone else, you may need to prove the relationship and present a declaration of financial support or guarantee accepted by the country. Do not assume that a family member's card, without an additional document, will be treated as available money for you.

### 3. Cash

Cash is accepted, but there is no need to carry your entire budget in bills. Besides the risk of loss or theft, anyone entering or leaving the European Union with **€10,000 or more in cash**, or the equivalent, must make a customs declaration according to [Regulation (EU) 2018/1672](https://eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/EN/TXT/?uri=CELEX%3A32018R1672). For this limit, traveler's checks, bearer instruments, and certain forms of gold may also count. Prepaid cards appear in the regulation's definition of cash, but Annex I does not yet specify which ones are included, so today they do not count towards the limit.

Bring a reasonable reserve for the beginning of the trip and distribute the rest among accessible and verifiable means. The guide on [how much money to take on a trip](https://usepicnic.com/en/blog/how-much-money-to-bring-on-a-trip) helps separate an emergency reserve from a daily budget. If you intend to transport large amounts, also understand [how customs declaration works](https://usepicnic.com/br/blog/e-dbv-como-declarar-compras-e-passar-pela-alfandega).

### 4. Proof of pre-paid expenses

Hotel, transportation, and tours paid in advance help show that part of the cost is already covered. In some countries, the financial benchmark changes when there is proven accommodation. In France, for example, the official daily requirement is lower for those who present a hotel reservation.

These receipts do not automatically replace the resources for food, transportation, and return. They help explain the budget.

### 5. Invitation letter, sponsorship, or host guarantee

The Schengen Borders Code admits sponsorship or a host guarantee when national legislation provides for this route. The format, authentication, and documents of the responsible party vary by country.

An informal message saying "they will stay at my house" does not necessarily equate to an official invitation letter. Consult the authority of the country of entry before traveling.

## How much money do you need to prove in 2026?

There is no single table for all of Europe. Below are four official examples, verified on **September 25, 2026**.

| Country | Official benchmark for one person | What changes the calculation |
| ------------ | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Portugal** | €75 per entry + €40 per day | Proven guaranteed accommodation and food, or an accepted statement of responsibility, may waive this benchmark |
| **Spain** | €122 per person/day, with a minimum of €1,099 per person | The minimum applies regardless of the length of stay |
| **France** | €32.50/day with a valid _attestation d’accueil_; €65/day with a hotel; €120/day without a hotel | Partial reservation applies each bracket to the corresponding days |
| **Italy** | Table by duration; from 6 to 10 days, €44.93/day for one person | Group travel has different benchmarks |

These values are **entry benchmarks**, not a budget recommendation. A trip can cost more, especially in high season or with travel between cities. To plan actual expenses, see [how many euros to take to Europe](https://usepicnic.com/br/blog/quantos-euros-levar-para-a-europa).

### Example: 10-day trip

Applying only the official formulas above for one person:

- **Portugal:** €75 + (€40 × 10) = **€475**;
- **Spain:** €122 × 10 = **€1,220**. On a 4-day trip, the multiplication would yield €488, but the minimum of **€1,099** applies;
- **France:** **€325** with a valid _attestation d’accueil_, **€650** with a hotel for all days, or **€1,200** without a hotel;
- **Italy:** €44.93 × 10 = **€449.30**.

The difference shows why copying a generic number from a forum is risky. Check the rule of the country of entry and your accommodation situation close to the travel date.

## Tourism, visas, and residency do not use the same yardstick

This is the distinction that avoids most of the confusion.

### Short-term tourism

Brazilians with a regular passport can travel without a visa for tourism or business for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, according to the [agreement between Brazil and the European Union](https://eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/EN/TXT/?uri=celex%3A02012A0921%2802%29-20221001). The exemption waives the visa, not the entry requirements.

At the border, the agent may ask for travel documents and financial means. In most cases, you do not submit a dossier in advance, but you must be able to demonstrate the conditions if asked.

### Schengen visa application

Those who need a visa present the documentation during the consular process. The [European Commission](https://home-affairs.ec.europa.eu/policies/schengen/visa-policy/applying-schengen-visa_en) includes proof of purpose, accommodation, financial means, and intention to return among the supporting documents.

The consulate may define the period for statements, translations, and specific formats. Follow the checklist of the representation responsible for the application, not a generic tourism list.

### Long-term visa or residency

Study, work, family reunification, and residency have their own national rules. Some processes look at a stable monthly income; others look at savings, scholarships, employment contracts, or the financial responsibility of a third party.

The daily tourist amounts in the table above should not be used to calculate a residency visa. Consult the official portal of the country and the exact category of the authorization.

## How to organize financial proof before boarding

An efficient folder doesn't need to be 50 pages long. It needs to be current, legible, and coherent.

1. **Check the country where you will pass through border control.** On a connection within the Schengen Area, immigration usually occurs at the first point of entry into the area. Also, see how the [EES works on first entry and connections](https://usepicnic.com/br/blog/ees-europa-biometria-primeira-entrada-conexao).
2. **Open the official source of the destination.** Verify the amount, documents, accommodation, and update date.
3. **Calculate the benchmark for the actual duration.** Consider all travelers and the rules for minors or groups, when applicable.
4. **Generate recent statements.** Prioritize documents in your name and with an available balance or limit.
5. **Save everything offline.** Use a folder on your phone and a cloud copy; print the main documents.
6. **Put together the story of the trip.** Return ticket, accommodation, itinerary, and insurance must align with the period and budget.
7. **Bring a backup payment method.** A card can fail, be blocked, or not work at an establishment.

To choose the main method and the backup, compare the [best card to use in Europe](https://usepicnic.com/en/blog/best-card-to-use-in-europe). For long trips, the guide on [cards for exchange programs](https://usepicnic.com/br/blog/cartao-para-intercambio) helps you think about limits, access to balance, and replacement.

## Is a digital bank statement accepted at immigration?

It can serve as part of the set, provided it is a verifiable document and clearly shows that the funds are available to you. The fact that the institution is digital does not invalidate the balance. The problem arises when the traveler only brings a screenshot with no name, no date, or no account identification.

Prefer the official PDF statement for countries that accept internet-generated documents. **Spain is an express exception:** its regulation does not accept bank letters or internet bank statements. In this case, the card must be accompanied by a statement in the accepted format, or you must use another provided method, such as cash, a certified check, traveler's checks, or an updated bankbook. If you use more than one account, organize the documents in order and only add up the amounts if they will all be accessible during the trip.

The same care applies to an international balance. The document should help the agent answer four simple questions: **whose account is it, when was the balance calculated, what amount is available, and in what currency**.

## Common mistakes in financial proof

- **Using an old amount:** national benchmarks can be updated annually.
- **Bringing only the card:** it proves that a payment method exists, not how much is available.
- **Relying on the internet:** roaming, battery, and login can fail.
- **Showing a third party's account without explanation:** ownership and responsibility for funding need to be documented.
- **Confusing limit with budget:** having a high limit does not change the actual cost of the trip nor guarantee that the card will work.
- **Ignoring already contracted expenses:** reservations help explain why the available balance is compatible.
- **Treating Europe as a single rule:** Portugal, Spain, France, and Italy already show very different formulas.
- **Promising entry based on one document:** the decision considers the whole picture and belongs to the border authority.

## Final checklist for immigration

Before leaving home, confirm:

- [ ] passport issued less than 10 years ago and valid for at least 3 months after the planned departure from the Schengen Area;
- [ ] return or onward ticket;
- [ ] accommodation reservations or a valid invitation letter;
- [ ] recent statement with name, date, balance, and currency;
- [ ] proof of balance or limit for cards;
- [ ] small reserve in cash;
- [ ] travel insurance when applicable, including the policy for the [insurance offered by the card](https://usepicnic.com/br/blog/seguro-viagem-do-cartao), if applicable;
- [ ] itinerary compatible with the declared duration;
- [ ] files saved offline;
- [ ] official amounts double-checked on the destination's website.

Proving funds at European immigration is less about carrying an envelope full of bills and more about presenting a coherent trip. Recent statements, documented cards, reservations, and a return ticket form a set that is easy to understand. The numbers change from country to country, so the official source of the destination always beats a generic rule found on the internet.

Prepare the folder a few days in advance, bring more than one payment method, and keep the funds accessible throughout the trip. That way, if there are questions at the border, you can answer clearly without relying on memory, the airport's signal, or a single card.
